Freerice

While I usually recommend learning vocabulary from context rather than lists and definitions, we can use these techniques to practise what we already know. Today, my recommendation is for a website run by the UN World Food Programme, where you can improve your knowledge while earning rice for correct answers. These grains of rice are then used to feed the hungry around the world.

You can choose from many categories, such as History and Geography, Maths, Science and Language Learning. In the English category, you can choose from vocabulary, spelling, grammar, proverbs and root words.

All questions are multiple-choice, and you usually have to choose the definition or complete a sentence.

Learn Vocabulary and Feed People

Follow the link to the Freerice vocabulary practice. Set a five or ten-minute timer and challenge yourself to raise as much rice as possible for world hunger. The options given as definitions for the words are often somewhat obscure or have less known meanings. This can be useful as English words often have very specific uses depending on the context.

Keep coming back to strengthen the knowledge you have. The vocabulary gets progressively more difficult the more correct answers you give, so don’t feel discouraged when you encounter words you’re not familiar with.
